LG Electronics LightScribe 10x SATA Blu-ray Combo Internal Drive UH10LS20K - Bulk (Black) An OK Blu Ray Drive

An OK Blu Ray Drive, (What's this?) I have 2 units both work as advertised. The drive is quiet, reads most disks and has been a good performer. Drive comes bundled with all the necessary software to get it up and running.
A fair value for the money.
Very satisfied, (What's this?) It's quiet, it reads quick, plays my Blue Ray DVDs wonderfully. The finish is a bit shiny compared to my Cooler Master chassis, but I can get over that. I used the Cyberlink PowerDVD 8 that came with the drive. Works great on my XP machine.
Reasonably fast but could be more reliable, (What's this?) While it is much faster than my 4x Lite-On BD-ROM reader, there are some spots on some discs where it consistently runs into trouble and errors out where my 4x reader has no problem. It is not all that frequent and I have both drives, so I can always go back to the 4x when that happens, but if you only have this BD-ROM reader you would be stuck. This is probably something that could be fixed with new firmware. As of this review LG has not yet released any updated firmware for this drive. The LiteOn iHAS104 has been 100% reliable with the current firmware, though it is painfully slow being a 4x max drive. Unfortunately there is no 10x Lite-On drive available yet or that is what I would have.

LG Electronics 10X Internal SATA Blu-ray Disc Rewriter WH10LS30 (Black) Perfect, burns and plays everything!

Fantastic perfomance for the money!, I have purchased three of these drives and used them in three different computer projects. The drives have performed perfectly. The drive is a black front internal Blu-ray reader/burner that reads and writes Blu-ray single and dual layer, CD, DVD single layer, DVD Dual Layer in -R and + R formats and it is a very fast SATA interface drive. I used Riplock to modify the drive firmware and it doubled the reading speed on media so that I can read a full Blu-ray Dual Layer disk in about 12 minutes.

I am using Windows 7 as the operating system and the drive installed quickly and the software supplied with the drive worked perfectly. It read every Blu-ray disk I owned. I burn disks using ImgBurn and I am having no issues. I recommend this Blu-ray drive as a good buy and it is priced right.
Nnever used it, but..., A Kid's Review
I couldn't use this product because it was too new for my PC. However, I have heard nothing but good things about this brand and product.
LG BD burner WH10LS30, This is a short and not so sweet review of my LG WH10LS30 BD burner. This LG BD burner quite working within several months of being installed and I did not even bother to seek a replacement under warranty because I was never able to update the firmware or software for this BD, and once it simply quite working that was the end for me because I value reliability over all other attributes. I have just ordered the new 12X Pioneer BDR-206 Blue-ray burner. I should have gone with the very reliable and highly recommended Pioneer brand in the first place but wanted to same a few bucks -- big mistake.
Blue ray and ability to write bluray, (What's this?) Simple hookup-jst put on case bay and hook to sata and your off and running. I have written to -r blueray-ReWrite (rw) and have use imageburn (free on web) and nero 9 burn.
A year later, still works, Well I thought I'd write a review on this thing since I've got some free time. I bought this last year as a black friday deal, though I think I paid the same price for it that's listed here.... but anyway, a year later, it's still holding up just fine. I've had no issues with this drive whatsoever. So if you're considering purchasing this drive, there's nothing to worry about. The performance is to my satisfaction and it's been pretty durable over the past year. Reads and writes just fine and the disc tray never jams up (seems to have been a problem with other previous drives I've owned). Installed without problems and has been easily detected by two biostar motherboards so far (upgraded my older system). 5 stars from me. LG products never seem to give me any trouble.
Do not buy!, This product is not supported by LG and is discontinued. There is no help with it, the drivers, or software that comes with it. The LG website will not even allow you to contact them about it BEWARE!

Their site with the Discontinued label at top after model name, http://www.lg.com/us/computer-products/optical-media/LG-internal-dvd-burner-BH10LS30.
    WARNING - Stay Away,
I was excited to find an LG Blu-ray player/burner for under $100, especially since it had Cyberlink's Blu-ray Disc Suite. I had used older versions of Cyberlink's PowerDVD for many years. Cyberlink is NOT what it used to be.

From the first day, every movie I watched was pixelated, ...like it was some security feature.

Over 3 months, I tried to burn 6 BD Disks. All but one of them failed, ...either with error messages or just freezing for hours.

Then 2 months ago, Cyberlink's programs just stopped playing Blu-ray discs and the program would crash within seconds of the movie starting.

The bottom line is that LG partnered with Cyberlink and MUST ensure that their product is functioning properly. You wouldn't believe the number of people with the exact same problem. When I contacted Cyberlink, they stopped supporting this media version in June 2011. I purchased this drive in Feb. 2011. Cyberlink is offering no help, other than to suggest I spent MORE money and buy another one of their horrible products.

Instead of demanding a resolution from Cyberlink, LG is brushing it off by saying "It's a software problem and not LG's fault". If LG doesn't pressure Cyberlink into honoring their software's reliability, then LG is equally responsible for the drive not doing its job.

I am ashamed of LG's overall response to this widespread problem. Furthermore, stay away from ANYTHING having to do with Cyberlink. They are not the company I loved all those years ago.
Perfect, burns and plays everything!, (What's this?) This thing is perfect for anyone needing a Bluray burner, and ofcourse it reads and burns CD and DVDs. Burns are perfect speeds, reads are perfect speeds, looks really nice, and YES it does have an access light, its a blue circle bulb. Very neat, I love it.
Failure waiting to happen!, I am now on my fourth replacement in a year. I bought it in June. 2010. The drive is, believe it or not, a commercial drive (I sure hope commercial would be of a higher quality than this). You cannot find it on the LG website.

I have to say, that the LG customer service was great. One of the reps slipped and said that they were having a very high level of laser failures in this drive especially since this is rated as a commercial drive. I would have to believe him, from the fiasco I have had to endure.

It is now out of manufacturer's warranty so I got my last replacement from LG about 2 weeks ago. Fortunately, I have a one year warranty extension from American Express, so I still have a year to go on the exended warrant they provide..

When, not if this last drive fails, I will get a refund from American Express and get a different brand of burner.
Works great., (What's this?) I've had this burner for over a year now. No problems and zero maintenance. Great for the price. Would prefer a little faster but not big deal.

ASUS BW-12B1ST/BLK/G/AS 12X Blu-ray Internal Burner with Disc Encryption, Black ASUS Blu-Ray Burner

bad site, lousy rebate, good drive, (What's this?) I installed this drive in a newly built PC with windows 7. The first problem was with
    software installation.
Great Price, No Software to Play Blu Rays, (What's this?) Maybe I was just naive, but I thought that a blu ray drive would come with some sort of software to play blu ray discs. No such luck.
Worked Great While It Worked......, (What's this?) Bought this for my new PC build because of the specs and price. Worked great for a couple weeks then suddenly stopped for no apparent reason. Windows 7 Troubleshooting says the drivers need to be reinstalled but can't find them. I went to the Asus website and tried to download drivers but their download page doesn't function properly. Specifically, it asks you to choose your OS from a dropdown menu but the menu is empty. The website will not allow you to continue without making one choice from a menu of 0 items so you can't proceed. If this is Asus customer service then this will be the last Asus product I buy.

UPDATE: I was able to get the unit working again by restoring my pc to a point before the drive issue occurred. I have had no problems with the product since but I never did receive a reply from Asus Customer Support. So, while I have upgraded the item rating to 3 stars I don't think I could ever suggest buying any Asus product because their Customer Support is non-existant.
Great Blu-ray Burner, (What's this?) I have ripped and burned DVDs and Blu-rays without making a bad one.

When a disc spins-up the sound isn't that loud. My bad Blu-ray burner was a Pioneer and it was much louder.

The only issue I noticed was sometimes ripping a audio cd the drive will make errors when the drive is at it's max speed. Too fix this issue I dropped the speed down to 16x. Firmware version is 1.02 I'm hoping the next firmware update will take care of this error issue.

This is a OEM so no sata cable
This is a great Bluray, (What's this?) No doubts about this at all... only problem is BLURAY SOFTWARE!!! They don't include any player like some other competitors due, yet that shouldn't stop you. The performance is phenominal, it isn't too loud, and it is very quick on my Phenom II X6 with 2gb vid card.

Get this before its 200 dollars or something.
ASUS Blu-Ray Burner, (What's this?) This is a nice drive. It ships as promised and works very well, as advertised. I would suggest the vendor provide better support info and maybe they could include a simple software title, which facilitates blu-ray recording.

Make sure you have the software to use this drive or you'll be using the BD capable drive for slower than necessary DVD writing.
Failed with first blu-ray disk insertion, (What's this?) Failed right out ogf the box, seemed to install fine. The first attempt to read a blu-ray failed at 7%, drive noisy. Bye bye asus, shipped back. Bought a sony optirac and put the same disk in and its reading it much much fast without flaws. No firmware update available on the asus support website.
Not bad for this cheap drive, (What's this?) It takes a while to spin up and read the disc when it's already in the drive but does the job so no complains.

LG Electronics WH12LS39K M-Disc 12X Blu-Ray Disc Rewriter and HD DVD-ROM Drive - Bulk Packaging Failed with 4 weeks

Failed with 4 weeks, (What's this?) I bought this drive primarily for it's M-Disc burning capability. Purchased Nov 19th 2011, I received and installed it in good working order that week. I burned 2 milleninata disks without problems and an archival grade MAM-A gold disk within the first day. Took a break during the holidays and drive sat for 4 weeks until today. The drive appears to have failed as of Jan 5th 2012 and will be returning it. Hopefully return process will go well and any replacement will last longer.
Blu Ray Newbie, (What's this?) I've been burning cds and dvds for years and decided to jump into the blu ray burning world without knowing much about blu ray burning. I did some scouting around on Amazon and other sites, trying to take advantage of reviews and try and get a feel for the best burner and media so that I don't jump into something that turns into a headache quickly. You can read some real nightmares of people who have had very bad experiences out there!

I bought this Internal LG burner LG Electronics WH12LS39K M-Disc 12X Blu-Ray Disc Rewriter and HD DVD-ROM Drive - Bulk Packaging with the M-Disc capabilities (have not tested the M-disc capabilities) without having read any reviews (because no one has reviewed it on Amazon). I decided to purchase it because the previous models of this drive got pretty decent reviews.

Now for the tricky part! Which media do I buy? I decided to try cheap media at first and I'm glad I did! I bought a 25 pack of the Optical Quantum 25GB 4X BD-R Logo Top Spindle - 25 pcs found also here on Amazon and so far I have yet to burn a bad disc! Out of the 25 pack I still have 14 left. I know that once I finish the 25 that I'll purchase a 50 pack spindle next...

Part of my success may be that I also have a LGBD550 player and so my drive and player are both LG? Part of my recipe is that I use the application Imgburn exclusively for burning the discs and I never go over 2x speed even though the discs state they can go faster. Sure it takes longer but so far no coasters!

Also, this burner came with software for viewing blu rays on the pc, a sata power cord and data cord.

LG Electronics GGC-H20L LightScribe Blu-Ray/HD DVD Combo Drive (Black) Great drive

Great drive, (What's this?) BlueRay! Light scribe! Whats not to like. Works great. Better than my Panasonic home theater Blue Ray player.
Awesome Blu player, (What's this?) For a straight forward Bluray/HD-DVD/DVD player in a HTPC you cannot go wrong with this. Coupled with the Asus Xonar HDAV1.3 Slim card, your blu experience will be VERY rewarding! No problems with HDCP playback with this drive... playback of even BD+ is a snap.
LG HDDVD player with no HDDVD video codex, I like the product, however, there was not any HDDVD codex to play the HDDVD movies that I have. That was very lame, because I had to go and buy extra software which should have been unnecessary considering the player can play all three formats, DVD, HDDVD, and Blu-ray. I firmly believed that the software would be included for all three formats.

It is a good player though.
Good Blu Ray Drive., It works just like I need it work. It was cheap and works as expected. Not much more for me to say with the other reviews. There are no complaints here.
LG Blu-ray ROM, (What's this?) The LG Bluray ROM is a very good one for the price. I wanted to experiment with Blurays and this was a very affordable option. I haven't noticed anything wrong with the unit so far. I would recommend this unit.
Nice Drive, (What's this?) I bought this drive for a HTPC. It works well and installed with no problems.

On the down side, the activity light can be distracting. At least it's blue as it reminds me which drive is the blueray drive. ;-)

It doesn't always read at 6x- sometimes it starts out at 3x and works it's way up. I dont know if this happens with other drives.
It's Blu-Ray and HD DVD, together at last!, Good Things:
    1) It reads Blu-Ray and HD DVD discs. Great for a home theater or do-everything PC. HD DVD capability will be attractive to cheapskates who can buy HD movies for a fraction of the cost of Blu-Ray.
    2) It does the usual stuff you'd expect, reading and writing DVD (single and dual layer) and CDROM. It rips audio CDs just fine too.
    3) It claims to support Lightscribe discs, but I've never tested that. Sharpie markers are cheaper and faster.

    Bad Things:
    1) The bundled player software is not a full version, so you may need to upgrade or buy a different program. (New versions may not support HD DVD.)
    2) The first drive I got was defective... it wouldn't read Blu-Ray or HD DVDs consistently, although it read and wrote DVD just fine. The replacement works great. This is why it lost one star.
    3) There can be problems if your TV and computer video card aren't HDCP compliant. Something called AnyDVD may fix that if it's legal where you are. (Cyberlink's "BD Advisor" program can check if your computer is up to the task of playing Blu-Ray content.)
    4) It doesn't write Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, but who cares, since you can't afford Blu-Ray blank media yet anyway.
    5) The activity LED is too bright if it's in your line of sight when watching movies. I covered it with tape.

    [update, August 2011]
It now fails to burn dual-layer DVDs. At first I thought it was just the cheap Memorex ones, but I risked a genuine Singapore Verbatim and that failed in exactly the same way. Single-layer burns are still OK.

A recently discovered Bad Thing: EAC (Exact Audio Copy) rips CDs very slowly when using this drive (and reportedly most other Blu-ray drives). Dbpoweramp runs at full speed.
Great combo drive, This is the second drive I have gotten and have been very happy with it. The included software allows playback of both HDDVD and Blu-ray disks. The firmware update is simple with the application disk on-line. I don't think this drive will be available for long.

  • 23 hours of standard definition content or 72 CDs on a single disc.
  • Enough storage for nine hours of HD movies.
  • Blu-ray Disc offers an unprecedented 25 GB capacity on a single-layer disc and 50 GB on a dual layer disc.
  • More capacity with advanced codes such as AVC

Pioneer BDR-206DBK 12x Internal Blu-ray Disc/DVD/CD Writer (Black) OEM - No software Much better than others

    Best of the best, (
Much better than others, (What's this?) I had a lot of problems with LG products. They would hang while burning BR-D, and the unfinished disc could not be ejected, until I rebooted the PC.
The Pioneer product has been flaw less so far. I should have bought this product instead of wasting so much money on BR-Ds that had to be tossed, because
they did not burn properly with the LG product.
Good drive but relatively slow, (What's this?) I got this drive to install in a Core i7 Hackintosh running MacOS X Snow Leopard. I need to be able to convert some Blurays I have so I can view them on a Roku device, as well as the other Macs in the house (including the Hackintosh) which do not have a Bluray player.

The drive replaced an internal DVD writer with no problems. The operating system recognized it with no problems whatsoever. I use MakeMKV in conjunction with Handbrake to end up with high resolution mp4s, which I can then watch on the Roku.

MakeMKV takes a long time to read the disk, about 3 hours for a full 50GB Bluray disk. The reported read speed hovers around 10MB/second. After reading some of the other reviews on Amazon, I decided to also try the LG WH12LS30 disk drive. With it I was able to see read speeds upwards of 16MB/second, which speeds up the read process quite a bit.

The drive is quiet during operation or at least quieter than the fans in my computer. I did not test the burn functionality of the device.
Great Blu-ray burner for the price, (What's this?) This burner went inside a 2010 MacPro and I have had great results with it using programs like Toast 10 (with Blu-ray plug-in) and Adobe Encore. I recommend this drive for any Apple MacPro users who are on the fence about moving on to BD-R disc burning.
Mac Users Stay Away, (What's this?) When its working its a great drive. But these drives have an issue that causes them to go into a sleep mode and never come back. You have to run through a couple of tricks to get them to show up again.
A solid performer, (What's this?) After doing some research, I was happy to find that this model worked well with my Windows 7 (64bit) system. Very fast and solid copies. Windows also recognized it right away. A good purchase if you want to upgrade to a Bluray burner.
Pioneer Bluray recorder (model BDR-206DBK 12x internal drive), (What's this?) I needed to increase my availability for data storage, DVDs just weren't enough. I searched the web for reviews on different products and decided on the Pioneer. It was easy to install and has worked flawlessly.
Not good for Mac, (What's this?) I purchased this internal blu ray burner for my Mac Pro and it does not work well.

A couple if minutes after you turn your computer on, the mac does not find this optical drive. You must turn the computer off (not restart) in order to find it again. I returned it and purchased a LG internal blu ray burner and works perfectly. I definitely would not recommend this device if you have a mac computer.
Pioneer BDR-206 is Great Burner......, (What's this?) With the cost of Blu-ray finally beginning to come down. This burner is a perfect fit. It works with all the new media where as my LG did not......LG is running at a turtles pace with their up-dates......I highly recomend this product.....You can back up a lot of data on a 50gb Dual Layer disc....It also works well with DVD's too......
Excellent Blu-ray burner, (What's this?) I purchased this internal Blu-ray burner to produce Blu-rays as part of my film and video transfer business. I decided to go with an internal drive because I already have so many devices connected to USB ports on my new computer. The only problem I had with the installation was not having a port close to the drive bay to connnect the power cable. This was the fault of the computer, not the drive. I solved this problem by buying a 12-inch extension Molex power cable. The drive works fine, but the reason for the 4 star instead of a 5 star rating is the flap catches on the tray when it is being closed. I have to hold the flap open when closing the tray. The factory installed DVD drive in the drive bay above the Blu-ray, does not catch on the flap. For some reason, the Blu-ray drive does not fit the bay exactly the same as the factory installed DVD drive. This is a minor inconvenience, and does not affect the operation of the drive.

    Sony Blu-Ray Optical Drive BD-5300S-0B

Sony Bluray Copy Great!!!, (What's this?)
Works Great with windows 7 64-bit, (What's this?) Hi,
This drive installed easily and windows found its own drivers for the drive and it just worked fine. :)

I played back my TRON blu-ray disk and it played back great.
I then burned a blu-ray of my home movie for 2011. Wooo my 1st HD home movie.
The disk played perfectly in my PS3 and looked awesome.

Like the Ad says, no cable, no screws included - who cares I have plenty of that stuff.
Also remember no software comes with this, but I already had software to do the job.

    Awesome deal, good quality drive.
Works (mostly) - Even so..., (What's this?) Install went smoothly; although, I was disappointed to learn this came with no SATA cable. The cost of a cable is under $5, which makes its exclusion even more surprising. And the exclusion meant inconvenience for me.

The drive is quirky! It will open for no good reason, and it sometimes closes when there has been no queue for it to close--right when you are in the process of inserting or removing a disk! In the month or so since I got this drive, it has completely eaten a blank Blu-ray disk--well, actually it swallowed it but didn't chew it up--and afterwards went right on working. Eventually, after removing the PC cover to work on the problem, I found the disk sitting on top of the drive, not in it. No idea how this can happen since the fit is snug. This event was a direct result of the fact that the drive tray retracted in that instant when the disk was 99% in place, but I hadn't let go of it yet. Quirky, however, I have learned to hold the tray with one hand while inserting or removing a disk with the other!

Most of the time this drive performs well, but certain Blu-ray disks will not invoke a reaction from the drive.
Outstanding player for those with the right knowledge, (What's this?) Excellent drive, plug and play 0 issues so far
It comes alone no software included but if you know where to look you will find the right player for you at no cost.
Burning a BD is a charm using the right tool(dvdfab)
I just build my new system and this is definitely an absolute winner at a great price (under a $100).
No screws included, but mayor good cases are tools free, so not a big deal (at least for me).
I was hesitating about the other bad reviews but I'm completely happy with it
    hopefully it will last.
Works better than expected, I bought this to put in an external case I bought on Amazon for $35.00. I couldn't use the blue-ray burner funtions until yesterday when I found a good free Blu-ray burning program on CNET. Works great and faster than expected. No bad burns to report. The only complaint is you can find the same drive for $99.00 at another well known internet computer parts provider. So, to sum up. For $135. I got a very good external blu-ray burner drive.
Good Product, Bad shipping, (What's this?) Pros: it does what is is supposed to do, and that is burn blu-ray.

Cons: 1) Took way too long to ship. The only product that I buy on Amazon and it takes 10+ days to ship. Every item that I buy from Newegg was shipped in 2 days.

    2) The product description should mention that you can't watch blu-ray movies without $50 software. It doesn't.

    3) The UPS people usually bring it up to my apartment, but apparently this box was too heavy, so they left it downstairs where it could have been stolen easily.

    4) Don't rely on SONY to get you the support that you need. I was chatting with a rep for over 2 hours without any progress. He finally directed me to other people, and I just gave up on them.

Note: Don't expect great things from Amazon. I was utterly disappointed in their performance, and I know now to pay the extra money and buy elsewhere.
It works well, I got this version as an OEM, so it didn't come with any software or extra like a sata cable. I use this to back up my photos for photography because camera these days save at a higher file size and a dvd wasn't going to cut it anymore. The window vista built-in disc burner is too slow and you have to guess how much gb is left. There are free blu-ray software out there like cdburnerXP and Imgburn that works.

Sadly BD-r are slow with 4x beong common and 6x comes at a premium price. Also BD-r are not as cheap as dvd, so burning takes like an hour to complete and a coaster disc is a costly failure. I had no failure burn yet, but it is a relatively new for me. I use Ridata BD-r 4x and it works. If you are new to blu-ray, maybe get the retail version so you get the software to burn and play movie, which to me is worth it.

Internal Serial ATA Blu-ray BD-ROM Drive

Great Product-poor software, (What's this?) The player is VERY easy to install and works beautifully.
Good Value, (What's this?) Sony BDUX10S SATA Blu-ray Disc-ROM Drive (Internal)

I've always been happy with my Sony purchases, and this item is no exception.
    Great Blu-ray player, (What's this?) Sony BDUX10S SATA Blu-ray Disc-ROM Drive (Internal)

It es a great PC Internal Blu-ray player! The price is a bargain! The software work perfectly .
Great when it works, and needs upgrade for 5.1 sound, I didn't expect much given the price of this drive, so I haven't been all that disappointed, but it has given me some headaches.

Firstly, it's not clear at first that although you CAN get digital sound through SPDIF with the included PowerDVD software, it is ONLY 2 Channel (Stereo / Prologic) digital sound. To get 5.1 digital sound, you need to upgrade to the full version of PowerDVD (which I did). One caveat to this, I did get 5.1 sound at first with the demo disk - either that's because it was the demo disk or because at first you get a trial period with 5.1 sound, I don't know, but when I played a rented disk a while later, I only got 2 channel sound until I upgraded. (It actually says "2 CH Version" or something like that in the info window of PowerDVD when running).

Secondly, and more frustratingly, the BIOS on my motherboard sometimes recognises the Bluray drive, and sometimes it does not (firmware of both drive and chipset upgraded). If it does not recognise it, bootup pauses for a while then carries on without it, as though it's just not there. I've done some research and found this seems to be specific to Intel I/O chipsets (which I have on my board). I am planning to swap the drive into an AMD machine to see if that fixes the problem.

Thirdly, HDCP is a real pain for swapping between displays.
Great Product, slighty difficult software., (What's this?) It was pretty much plug and play. All you need is a very basic knowlege of up to open a PC tower and what cables go where and you are in business.

The only catch I ran into (which could be an isolated incident) is needing an internet connection.

As soon as you install the software (which should come with it) it will need to update via the internet.

Anytime you want to watch a bluray it wants the internet connection to see if there are updates for that movie. I haven't seen a spot to turn that feature off.

The software is a very basic version (with an option to upgrade), but it work just fine as is. I havent found a movie yet that it wont play.

The most annoying part of the software: everytime I open it up to watch a movie it pops up a window with a form to fill out to register with the company. I filled it out 4 times and it still wont stop popping up. Now I just close the window and it will allow me to watch.

Overall: VERY VERY HAPPY WITH IT.
Great Blu-ray Drive- Bad Software, (What's this?) Ok to start off, the blu-ray drive is a quality product that works flawlessly and is great for the price now. I have a 22" widescreen monitor that can support and display HD quality as well as a decent quality graphics card (Nvidia 9400GT 1GB). I try to make my computer as much as a media center as I possibly can so it is no surprise that I wanted a blu-ray player for it.

To all those who bought this product and gave it a lower rating than usual due to its inability to play blu-ray DVDs especially the newer ones: this is not as much as a hardware problem as it is software. YES, it has a HORRIBLE software and drivers for it and YES the updates are completely useless. For this problem I recommend getting Cyberlink Power DVD 9 Ultra Edition. The one that is given to people I think is PowerDvd 6 which is a horrible version with a lot of bugs and no real helpful updates. To actually buy the Cyberlink Power DVD 9 would cost you maybe $80 or more. Instead, and I am not advocating for this in any way and not responsible for any repercussions that come from it but...*cough* torrents *cough**cough*. With it, you can download the entire Power Dvd 9 Ultra Edition in maybe 2-3 hours or less depending on your connection and have you watching movies afterward in a few minutes.

Bottom line is that if you want to purchase this blu-ray drive, you WILL HAVE to get better software....legally or illegally or it will cost you another $70-$80 easily. Hope this review helped.
Have fun getting this to work consistently, (What's this?) Save yourself the pain. Just buy a normal blu-ray player separate from your computer. Sometimes I could get the blu-ray player to work great. But often I'm re-installing drivers to get it running everytime Vista (64 bit ultimate) has a significant update. Currently I can't get it running after updating my Soundblaster audio card. Sometimes the blu-ray won't recognize a disc (however after a few restarts it might), or sometimes it will play but there will be no sound. Or sometimes, like now, I can't get it to work despite having re-installed and updating the blu-ray driver as well as the Cyber-link blu-ray player program. So I give up - I'm going to buy a normal blu-ray player.
Great Package, (What's this?) Before buying this product I did my research and found a tool from cyberlink that determines whether you can play blu-ray discs according to your hardware and software equipment at the following link ( http://www.cyberlink.com/stat/bd-support/enu/index.jsp ). The only thing I was missing was a software to play blu-ray. This product comes with the PowerDvD, which is the software that I needed to play the blu-ray discs. At the price you pay, this product is certainly a bargain!

This internal blu-ray drive is a retail item, so it comes with all the things you need to play blu-ray movies. The only bad thing is that you can't burn anything with it.

It's a great product and I've owned it for more than a week now testing it will all blu-rays I have, no regrets buying it.
    it's OK,
Great player . Using it for playng and backing up movies into Hard Drive., (What's this?)

Buffalo Technology MediaStation 8X External Blu-Ray Burner USB 2.0 BR-X816U2 (Black)

Works great on Mac, (What's this?) I use this all the time to burn BDs using Encore on Mac OS X and it works great. Very few discs fail, and those failures are just as likely to be flaws in the medium and not in the burner. I consider this a very reliable product and recommend it highly.
Impossible to install the software - no support, I'm using XP 32-bit SP3 and the installation aborts with a message "You must use the DVD-ROM to install".

    1. Attempted to install using my internal drive - No good
    2. Attempted to install using the external drive - No good
    3. Downloaded the files from Buffalo's website, it's just an image of the disk - No good
    4. Contacted support and got no response

The unit might be great, but without the software it's useless. Oh yeah, doesn't work with XP 64-bit.

Buffalo just makes cheap quality junk. I've used other products and they always seem to fall short.
Very Good Prouct, Upgrade from Powerdvd 8 to Powerdvd 9 it free, (What's this?) I bought Mediastation 8x to play and burn blu ray discs... Imagine my surprise when i pop in a blu ray movie and the picture was pixelating very bad... So after registering the mediastation 8x , i email buffalo technology about the problem i was having with mediastation 8x .. then 5 to 8 days later when i put in a disc an upgrade window pops up to upgrade to powerdvd 9 (a free upgrade)... after the upgrade all my blu ray discs started to play normally without any pixelating in the picture... So i am very happy now!! I have not burn any blu ray discs yet... The mediastation is solidly built.. So powerdvd 8 software is good for playing dvds, but it will not play blu ray movies without pixelating... If you buy this product, remember to upgrade to powerdvd 9 (a free upgrade)to play blu ray discs !!!! Easy to connect to pc...... I paid $200.00 an i am happy now.... So i gave this product 4 stars because it had bad blu ray player software...
Can't get a player to read it., (What's this?) The burner appears to be built sturdy. I downloaded the included softwares without any difficulty. I burned two discs, using Verbatim. One was photos and the other was a video. The system indicated that it copied successfully. I can play it back using the Buffalo burner but it would not work on any of my Blu-Ray players (Sony, Samsung, or Panasonic). I downloaded the recommended firmwares for the players but still did not work. Sent an email message to Buffalo but has not received a response.
Buffalo Technology MediaStation 8X, (What's this?) I do love the Buffalo MediaStation 8X External Blu-Ray Burner BR-X816U2. It is a good addition to any computer that needs the ability to archive data on Blu-Ray media. The Blu-Ray burner seems to work flawlessly. However be prepared to lose some expensive disks due to the video format restrictions of some Blu-Ray players. Do some homework and learn what data formats your Blu-Ray devices support before burning a disk. It could save some you some money on media.
Optimal performance, (What's this?) Great results from the first day of usage. Makes blu-ray burning easy and true to the original recording.
simple and effective, (What's this?) I have massive media, pictures and video that I need to keep forever, but get off my harddrives. Bluray is the answer and this drive burns files effectively to disk. I advise the 25gb discs over the 50gb ones since you can burn them at 8x and the 50s only at 2x. Simply put, a 25gb disc can be burnt in about 20 minutes, a 50gb takes over an hour.
Easy to install and works flawlessly, (What's this?) This is my first Blu-ray burner. I found this very easy to install and very easy to use. This was a very good option for me. When I upgrade computers in the future this burner will easily transfer to the new system.
Great product without needing any install software, This is a great product so far, only burned two Blu Ray discs so far, but to see the GH1 hacked video in full 40mbs quality on my Marantz BD7003 player is a wonderful experience that I can only recommend to everyone who has an HD camera capable of high MBS quality.

The discs I used are just some cheap 'Windata' discs, but for 10$ for 10, I couldn't go wrong. Honestly, I didn't even install the software or anything. Using Vista 32 bit, it automatically installed (usually a bad sign) but this burned FANTASTIC blu ray movies with Image Burn and using TEMPGenc Authoring Works 4 (I exported to file location, then used image burn) and it has been a dream.

Also appears like it would burn 'straight from sony vegas pro 9 and 10' however, I don't have a workflow like that, so just an FYI.
Do not waste your money, I purchased this unit in June, 2011. It was defective out of the box (no power). I returned it to Buffalo. And after waiting three weeks to get it replaced, they sent me a used unit they said was refurbished. When I told them I had returned a brand new unit and they replaced it with a used unit, they said that was not their problem, that if I didn't like it, I could send the used unit back to them and they would be happy to return the defective new unit. Unbelievable. Their attitude just sucked. The refurbished unit is an older model (with scratches and dings all over it). It is somewhat slow in burning Blu Ray discs which is what I bought it for. I will never buy another Buffalo product again.

Buffalo Technology MediaStation 12X USB 3.0 3D Ready External Blu-Ray Burner BR3D-12U3 (Black)

Buffalo Technology MediaStation 12X USB 3.0 3D Ready External Blu-Ray Burner BR3D-12U3 (Black), (What's this?) I bought this product so that I could have Blu-Ray capability for my Macbook Air. It works great with the software that I added to my Mac which is:

    1] Blu-ray Player
    2] Toast Titanium 11

I have also used it with my Windows 7 ASUS G73sw laptop and it works well without a hitch.
Slow Data Transfer to BD-RE dl Discs & QC Problem Update, (What's this?) 11-20-10 Initial comments:
My first test was to copy a 21GB data folder from a 128GB USB 2.0 flash drive. The Blu-ray drive was also connected to a USB 2.0 port. My current laptop does not support USB 3.0. I also used the Windows 7 Professional driver which was installed on auto-detection of the Blu-ray drive. The data transfer rate was 2.2MB/second and continually slowed to 800KB/second at end. It took around 7 hours to copy 21GB. I don't know how much faster it may have been if using Buffalo's supplied driver. Also, copying data from the laptops hard drive probably would have been faster. I'll update this review when I try some of these things. Build quality: I really liked the fit and finish of this drive except for one concern. While inserting the USB cable into the rear panel connector, the connector flexes inward quite a bit. I would prefer a more solidly mounted connector.
Buffalo Blu-Ray Burner, (What's this?) This Drive has done an excellent job for me. I have burn over 50 Blu-Ray Discs and not one problem.
USB 3.0 3D ready BR drive, (What's this?) Well the first one seems to work well only it just wont play 3d blu-ray movies...
the software that came with it clames I need to use a 3d player, even when this one said its a 3d player...

Amazon has shiped me another one, maybe this one is a bad one, I will find out, if the new one works, then I just know I will love it.
Mac Compatability info, Good news to report MAC OS X owners! This drive works with Roxio Toast 11 flawlessly. It also works with ADOBE ENCORE CS5 (PERFECT BLU RAY QUALITY). I would suggest that you learn to use encore, quality is much better than roxio toast.

Don't waste your time on this drive, (What's this?) I bought this drive and it was a total waste of my money. It would not turn fast enough to even burn a DVD much less a Blue Ray. In addition to the drive, I purchased a USB 3.0 express card for my laptop and then an additional power supply all to try to make this thing work but nothing worked. By the time I received all of the additional items to make this drive work, it past the return policy of the company by a few days so the seller would not take it for return. So now I have a paper weight with over $400 invested...stay away and don't waste your money!!! Buyer Beware!!! After this transaction the seller still keeps sending me advertisements to buy from them.
works great, (What's this?) I received the Media Station today. I burned 40 GB of data to a Verbatim BD-R DL with speed rating of 6X. The Buffalo burned it at 8x. Very happy. It took 28 minutes. Product is as advertised.

    LaCie d2 Blu-Ray 12x USB 2.0 and FireWire Drive 301906U

Just Works, (What's this?) I have the unit connected via FW400 to a Mac Pro 1st Gen machine. The unit burns blu-ray including LTH disks with no problems observed whatsoever. The unit has a Pioneer BDR-206 drive inside it. The only problems I have with it is it's high price and that it lacks FW800 capability.
Plug and Play- Awesome!, (What's this?) I never take the time to review the stuff I get. This however, has been great. I literally plugged it in to my MacBook Pro ( I did have Toast Titanium already installed) and started burning Blu-Ray disks. It's relatively fast, and so far all discs have played. I have used it to burn Blu-Ray discs as well as burn and copy SD DVD's. I've used it via fire-wire and USB with little difference in speed.
Fantastic external burner for Mac users, (What's this?)
LaCie Blu Ray burner, easy to use
    very sturdy, metal enclosure

definitely worth the purchase. great price. great product. works GREAT with MAC or PC.
Cannot play Blu-ray movies on Mac Platform (as of Aug 2010), (What's this?) Bought the drive to watch my Blu-ray movies on my new 27" iMac. No Blu-ray movie player exists in the Macintosh operating system so you can only use the drive for this purpose if you install Windows and get a Windows OS compatible blu-ray player. I requested it be returned. The supplier consented, paid for the return shipping, and refunded the entire sum of my puchase. Wonderful experiance.
GROSSLY OVERPRICED!, This is a good product that works as advertised. The BIG problem I have with this product is the PRICE! LaCie is selling a $110 Pioneer BDR 206 drive installed in a standard LaCie USB 2.0/Firewire 400 enclosure for $380! That means you are paying $270 JUST for their enclosure! Why do they think this pricing is acceptable?

LaCie makes wonderful external drive enclosures that look good and work very well. So why only one star? Because of the outrageous price markup! LaCie does not make any Blu-ray or DVD drives themselves. In the case of this product all they make is an external USB/Firewire 400 enclosure, then they drop in a Pioneer BDR 206 internal SATA drive, and JACK UP the price!

You can accomplish the same thing by buying the Pioneer BDR drive separately for $110:
    Pioneer Internal Blu-ray Disc/DVD/CD Writer BDR-206 (Black)

Then buy this LaCie DVD burner that uses the SAME USB 2.0/Firewire 400 external enclosure for only $90:
LaCie 301484U 22X d2 DVDRW DL Lightscribe USB2.0 and FireWire US

If you were to then remove the DVD burner from its enclosure (using a phillips screwdriver) and replace it with the Pioneer BDR drive, and you would end up with essentially the SAME product as the one being sold here, but for only $200 out of pocket! You'd even end up with a spare SATA Samsung SH-S223 Lightscribe drive that could be dropped into the internal drive bay of a PC or Mac Pro Desktop, or you could just sell it on eBay! Yes, you'd probably void the warranty from LaCie by opening the enclosure, but you could build TWO of these products for almost the same price LaCie is charging here for ONE.

If you really need the Roxio software, you'd have to buy it separately. (Personally I don't need or want the Roxio software)

LaCie REALLY ought to think about charging a more reasonable amount of money for this product!

If you don't want to void any warranties, another CHEAPER option would be to simply buy the Pioneer drive and drop it into one of these aftermarket firewire enclosures (NOTE: I HAVE NOT PERSONALLY TESTED EITHER OF THE FOLLOWING ENCLOSURES!):

    Bytecc ME-535Limited USB/Firewire 800/eSata Enclosure:
Works Great, (What's this?) I am very happy with this drive. It's faster at burning normal DVDs than the internal drive in my iMac.
High Quality Burner, I had been looking for a high quality Blu-Ray burner for a while and found this LaCie drive. I have had it for two weeks and have found it to be rock solid...just what I need. This drive is a bit pricy but I am finding it well worth it.
