Panasonic BD-R Drive Good, but not the best!, (What's this?) It does the job. For the price I cannot complain. I new ahead of time it did not come with any kind of software or instructions. It would have been nice if it had come with software though. BD-R software is fairly pricey and hard to get in some cases. But for $140 compared to all of the competing BD-R (Slimline/notebook) all going for $200 and up, I am satisfied with this unit.
Perfect Upgrade, (What's this?) I put off upgrading the optical drive of my Dell Inspiron 15 as I was a bit weary of the price of the drives. When I realized I could get a BD-R drive for just over $100, it was a no-brainer! And, this upgrade was flawless. The hardest part of upgrading my Windows 7 32-bit system was using the screwdriver... which needless to say, wasn't hard at all.
It works flawlessly! Great purchase. I use it to rip and burn Blu-rays., (What's this?) I didn't have the "screwdriver" necessary so I went to Walgreen's and purchased a $3.99 screwdriver pack.
Works great for Macs!, (What's this?) Bought this item to use with my MacBook Pro and Mac Mini for playing Blu-Rays and burning them. Since the interface is USB, it's a bit slow on the burning side, but for playing it's great. As many may know, there's a new software for playing blu ray discs on the mac - you can get it at macblurayplayer.com. Caveat that the software is not quite ready for primetime but shows promise!
This item is a 12.5mm high drive so won't fit in the MBP or in the older mini. However, I had an enclosure that it fit in and plan to carry it with me when needed for watching or storing large amounts of data. I like the fact that it's tray-load as I think it allows me to play multiple types of discs (some people still use the mini-disc) which I can't play now on either mac. Great product and also great service in getting this item. It arrived quickly and with no packaging problems - and brand new as well.
Three Bought. Zero failures., (What's this?) I have purchased three of these Panasonic (Matshita) UJ240AS optical drives, with the first one purchased over a year ago. None of these drives has ever failed. As a matter of fact not one of them has even hiccuped in their operations. The only drawback to these optical drives is the lack of playback software, but there are many companies out there willing to indulge you with playback software. Because these drives are, to me, a "known commodity" coupled with the fact that none of the three purchased has failed to operate as it should, I would buy no other.
Works great!, (What's this?) Installed it in my G51VX without a hitch. Win7 took care of the drivers for me.
I was slightly worried about the faceplate not matching with the rest of the laptop case, but I found that the front bezel was held on by 4 small plastic tabs. The old bezel from the laptop fit right onto the new drive, so now it looks just like it did before.
I swapped out my DVD drive for this drive. I've ripped a few blu-ray's with WinX Blu-ray Decrypter and it seems to be working just fine so far.
Excellent upgrade for Asus G73, (What's this?) I purchased this to upgrade the 12.5 mm CDRW in my Asus G73SW laptop. I was pleasantly surprised to learned that it is much faster than the drive it replaced and works great to play BluRay movies through CyberLink PowerDVD 9. It does not come with any software, but Windows 7 (x64) installed drivers and I used a copy of PowerDVD that I had purchased some time back. The other BR player in my house is the Sony BDP S550 and this drive smokes it for movie loading time. This is easily the best upgrade for my laptop.
